Whenever people find out that I take photographs of families and children, the initial reaction is wonderment. I suppose convincing a toddler to stay still during a photo session is like wrangling a cat. Well, I must enjoy wrangling cats because I love working with kids. Copious amounts of patience and funny faces go a long way. But what about the shy kids, you ask? The key to photographing shy kids is to give them time. I know, I know, but what about the schedule? Rushing through a photo session with screaming children has never been my idea of a successful photo session. Making time and being patient not only eliminates your frustration as the photographer, but also puts the family at ease.
This past weekend I had the opportunity to catch up with a family that I had photographed last spring. Oh my has time flown by! Mikey is now a walking and giggling little boy with tons of personality. But with all that personality comes a bit of shyness. Giving Mikey his space and letting him warm up to me was the key to this photo session. It also doesn't hurt to play peak-a-boo for a few minutes! To give Mikey time to get comfortable with me, we started with taking photographs of Claudia who is expecting a baby boy this summer! We had a wonderful time getting some beautiful creative belly shots. By the time we finished with Claudia, Mikey was ready for his close up!
I had a wonderful afternoon spending time with Claudia, Mike, and Mikey. I am super excited to meet their newest addition this spring. Welcome to our afternoon family and maternity photo session!
